Wait! Before You Add a Pondless Water Feature to Your Yard...

Are you ready to transform your yard with a pondless waterfall feature? Here are a few tips I wish I had known before building a pondless waterfall in my mom's backyard. These tips should help you avoid common pitfalls (a few I learned the hard way - hey, I'm not perfect) and ensure a smooth installation process.

Planning Your Pondless Waterfall

Determine the Location

Choose a spot in your yard that complements your landscape and offers good visibility. Consider proximity to electrical outlets for the pump and lighting. Avoid areas with heavy tree cover to minimize debris.

Choose the Right Pump

Selecting the right pump is key to achieving the desired water flow for your waterfall. I recommend the Aquascape Backyard Waterfall Kit, which I used to install my mom's pondless waterfall. This kit makes it easy to install and enjoy a beautiful waterfall.

The kit includes a Waterfall Spillway diffuser and an energy-efficient AquaSurge® pump to optimize water flow. The AquaBasin® 45 acts as the water storage reservoir, holding up to 98 gallons of water. This basin simplifies installation, provides quick and easy pump access, and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

The kit also includes everything else you'll need, including a flexible PVC pipe, a 45 mil fish-safe EPDM liner, and an installation Kit containing silicone, pond and waterfall foam sealant, PVC cement, etc.

They also have different-sized kits, so you'll be able to find one that matches the size of the water feature you want to build.

Additional Materials

The kit doesn't include rocks, stones, plants, or any other landscaping elements.

Use a mix of larger rocks for the structure and smaller stones to fill gaps. Ensure the rocks are stable and won't shift over time.

Incorporate plants and other landscaping around the waterfall to blend it into your garden. Choose low-maintenance, water-loving plants that thrive in your climate.

Construction Tips

Here's a basic overview of what to expect during the installation process.

Digging the Basin

Excavate a basin at the waterfall's base to collect and recycle water. The basin should be deep enough to hold the pump and sufficient water to keep the system running smoothly.

Building the Waterfall

Construct the waterfall in layers, using flat stones to create shelves. Secure the stones with foam sealant to direct the water flow and prevent leaks.

Installing the Pump

Place the pump in the basin and connect it to the water source and waterfall. To maintain a natural appearance, conceal the tubing within the rocks.

Adding Finishing Touches

Incorporate plants and landscaping around the waterfall to blend it into your garden. Use low-maintenance, water-loving plants for a cohesive look.

Maintenance Tips

  1. Regular Cleaning: Check the pump and basin for debris regularly. Clean the pump intake and remove any buildup to ensure efficient operation.
  2. Water Levels: Monitor water levels, especially during hot weather. Add water as needed to compensate for evaporation and keep the system running smoothly.
