How Many Fish Can My Pond Safely Hold?
There is no single “correct” stocking rule, but a few conservative guidelines can keep most backyard ponds out of trouble.
General stocking guidelines
These guidelines assume a pond with a filter and pump that run continuously, good aeration from waterfalls, fountains, or an aerator, and regular testing and maintenance.
For goldfish and other small pond fish (shubunkins, comets, small native fish), a reasonable starting point is about 1 inch of adult fish length per 10 gallons of water.
For koi and large carp type fish, a safer starting point is roughly 1 inch of adult koi per 20 to 25 gallons of water, and many experienced koi keepers stay closer to 250 to 500 gallons per adult koi, especially for large fish.
