Your Pond Keeps Losing Water: How To Tell What's Really Causing It
If you keep glancing at your pond and thinking, "That water line looks lower than it did yesterday," you are not alone. Unexplained water loss is one of the most frustrating pond problems, especially when you are not sure whether it is natural evaporation or a real leak hiding somewhere in the system.
This guide explains how to distinguish normal evaporation from a leak. It also shows what to check first so you can narrow down the cause without tearing the pond apart.
Step 1: Decide Whether the Water Loss Is Actually Abnormal
Before you assume something is broken, you need a rough sense of how much water loss is normal for your climate and pond design.
On a hot, dry, windy day, an exposed pond can lose around 0.25 to 1 inch of water to evaporation in 24 hours. Shallow ponds with a big surface area relative to their depth usually lose more than deep, shaded ponds. Strong sun, low humidity, and constant wind all speed up evaporation.
A pond that loses more than about an inch per day for several days may have a leak or overflow issue. A steady drop during calm, cool weather is another reason to look beyond normal evaporation.
A sudden overnight drop of several inches is another red flag, especially if it happens when temperatures are mild. Evaporation works slowly. Fast changes usually point to a liner or plumbing problem. A low pond edge can cause the same sudden loss.
How to Measure Water Loss Accurately
Eyeballing the rock line is better than nothing, but a simple measuring routine gives you real numbers to work with.
- Pick a fixed reference point, such as the bottom edge of a rock that just touches the water when the pond is "full," or a mark on the skimmer faceplate.
- Take a photo or measure the distance from that point down to the water surface at the same time each day. A simple ruler or yardstick works fine as long as you hold it straight and use the same spot.
- Record weather conditions while you measure: temperature range, sun or clouds, and whether it was windy. These notes will help you separate evaporation from other causes.
If the daily loss is consistently small and tracks with hot, sunny days, you are likely fighting evaporation. If it is steady and noticeable regardless of weather, you can move on to leak-hunting.

Step 2: Rule Out Simple Operation and Splash Issues
Before worrying about a buried leak, make sure normal pond operation is not sending water outside the liner.
Check Waterfalls, Streams, and Fountains
Any feature that moves water above the pond surface is a common culprit. Pond edges change over time as rocks settle and plants spread. Those changes can redirect splash outside the liner.
Walk the whole length of your waterfall or stream with the pump running. Look and feel for:
- Water spilling behind or under rocks instead of back into the pond
- Damp soil, mud, or moss at the sides of the stream where the liner lip has sagged
- Water blowing out of the pond in a strong breeze, especially from tall fountains or thin jet sprays
If you find an area where water is escaping, shut the pump off and adjust the rockwork and liner. Raise any low liner edge behind the rocks and trim plants that wick water outward. Reposition a fountain if its spray lands beyond the pond.
Even a slow trickle behind one rock can add up to several inches of water loss over a week.
Inspect Edges and Low Spots
Liner edges and soil settle over time. What was once 3 inches above the water line can slump down until it is barely above the surface. When the pump runs and the water level rises slightly in one corner, it can quietly overflow the liner.
Walk the perimeter of the pond and gently pull back mulch or gravel near the liner edge. Look for:
- Spots where the water level is nearly even with the top of the liner
- Dark, damp soil or algae growth just outside the liner
- Plant roots or grasses that have grown over the liner and may be wicking water into the soil
Correct any low edges by lifting the liner and building up the soil or underlayment beneath it. Be cautious if you find tree roots or buried utilities nearby and consider a professional if you need to move large rocks or cut roots.
Confirm You Don't Have an Overflow or Auto-Fill Quirk
Some ponds have a built-in overflow to prevent flooding in heavy rain, or a float valve that automatically adds top-up water. If these are set incorrectly, the pond may briefly fill and then constantly bleed water through the overflow when the pump is on.
Watch the pond as it runs at its normal operating level. If you have an overflow pipe or weir, make sure water is not constantly trickling out of it. If the pond never quite reaches that level even after a long topping-up, the leak is likely somewhere below.
If you use an auto-fill line, consider turning it off temporarily while you measure water loss. A stuck or misadjusted valve can hide a leak by constantly refilling the pond.
Step 3: Compare Water Loss With the Pump On vs Off
Once basic edge and splash issues are addressed, the next question is whether your water loss is tied to the pump running.
This simple test can quickly tell you whether to focus on plumbing and water features or on the main pond basin itself.
- Bring the pond to its normal full operating level and record the water level against your reference point.
- Let the pond run normally for 24 hours with all features on. Measure and record the new water level.
- Top the pond back up to the original reference level.
- Turn the pump off entirely so that water sits still in the main basin. If you have fish, be cautious about doing this for more than a day or two, and only if you have an alternative way to keep the water aerated and safe.
- After another 24 hours, measure the water level again.
Compare the two measurements.
- If you lose significantly more water with the pump on than with it off, the problem is probably in the plumbing, waterfall, stream, or filter return.
- If the loss is about the same whether the pump is running or not, the leak is more likely in the main pond liner or structure.
Use that information to focus your next inspection.
Step 4: If Loss Is Higher With the Pump On, Focus on Plumbing and Features
When water disappears mainly when the pump runs, the leak is usually somewhere along the path the pump is pushing water, not the standing portion of the pond.
Follow the Hose or Pipe Run
Carefully trace every hose or pipe from the pump to the filter, UV unit, waterfall box, or other outlets. Inspect each section for wear and loose fittings. Hidden damp soil can reveal where a line is leaking.
Feel each flexible hose for damage or an unusually soft section. Look at each connection for drips. If lines are buried, walk the route and feel for cool, soggy soil or unusually green grass that may be getting constant moisture.
Be very careful when digging near buried electrical lines or other utilities. If you are unsure where utilities run, call your local locating service before digging.
Any obvious leak or cracked fitting should be repaired or replaced. If you are not comfortable cutting and rejoining pipe or dealing with pressurized fittings, a qualified pond contractor or plumber is a safer choice.
Recheck Waterfalls and Streams With the Test in Mind
If your on/off test points to a pump-related leak, revisit your waterfall and stream with fresh eyes.
Look at what changes when the pump turns on:
- Does water level rise behind a weir box enough to spill over the back of the liner?
- Does water back up at the bottom of the falls and escape through a side cut in the soil or rockwork?
- Is the streambed liner cleanly turned up at least several inches along both sides, or are there low points where water can escape into the soil when the flow is high?
Correct a gap by raising the liner or adding underlayment. Reposition nearby rocks so they support the repaired edge. Sometimes simply reducing the pump flow slightly is enough to keep water inside the lined channel instead of spilling out at the sides.
Step 5: If Loss Is Similar With Pump On and Off, Focus on the Pond Basin
If your testing shows water disappears at about the same rate with the pump off, the leak is most likely in the main pond itself.
Fortunately, the water level can often help you narrow down where the leak is hiding.
Watch Where the Water Level Stabilizes
A structural leak usually drains the pond only to the damaged level. Once the water surface drops below that point, the leak slows dramatically or stops.
If you can safely allow the pond to drop without harming fish or pumps, you may notice that the water level:
- Drops quickly at first, then slows and "parks" at a particular height.
- Exposes a band of liner or rock that used to be underwater.
Mark the final water line with chalk or a piece of tape on several rocks around the pond. That horizontal line around the liner is where you should focus your inspection.
Look carefully, in good light, along that band for:
- Small punctures in the liner from rocks, tools, or animal claws
- Creases in the liner where water can channel out of the pond
- Folds where roots may have grown through
- Concrete cracks if you have a rigid or concrete pond
Tiny holes can be surprisingly hard to spot. Sometimes you find them more by feel than by sight, running your fingers slowly over the liner surface.
Be Careful With Fish While You Let the Level Drop
If you keep koi or goldfish, you cannot simply let the pond drain for days without a plan. Confined water heats quickly and can lose oxygen. Waste also becomes concentrated as the water volume falls.
If you need to lower the level to hunt for a leak, consider:
- Providing extra aeration with an air pump or temporary surface agitator while the volume is reduced
- Shading the pond to avoid overheating in summer
- Having a backup tank or holding tub available if water levels become unsafe
If you are not confident you can keep fish safe while levels drop, it is reasonable to stop the test early and work with a pond professional to locate the leak.
Step 6: Remember That Soil and Groundwater Can Work Both Ways
Sometimes it looks like the pond is "leaking" when the real issue is water moving between the pond and the surrounding soil in less obvious ways.
Wicking and Capillary Action at the Edges
Plants and soil that come into direct contact with the water can wick moisture away slowly. Unlike a sharp leak, this type of loss is often steady and subtle.
Look for landscaping that touches the water or overlaps the liner, since it can wick water into the surrounding soil. Roots or capillary action through soil or fabric can siphon water a little at a time.
Pull materials back from the edge so that only liner or rock extends slightly above the water line. A clean, visible liner lip helps break the path that allows water to travel outward through soil or root fibers.
Groundwater Pushing In or Out
After heavy rain, you might notice your pond water level changing in confusing ways. In some cases, groundwater can press against the outside of a liner and push it inward, "floating" the liner or creating folds. In others, water may move from the pond into freshly saturated soil more quickly than usual.
If your pond water drops faster right after a big storm and then stabilizes, it can be related to those shifting water pressures in the surrounding ground rather than a classic leak. These situations can be tricky, and in some soils it may be wise to consult an experienced pond builder who understands local conditions.
When to Use a Bucket Test
If you still cannot tell whether the loss you are seeing is from evaporation or a leak, a simple bucket test can help you compare your pond water directly to a small, controlled sample.
- Fill a clean plastic bucket with pond water and place it near the pond where it experiences the same sun and wind exposure. Do not add fish or plants.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket and the current water level on a rock or liner in the pond.
- Leave the bucket and pond undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours. If you normally run your pump, keep it running for a separate test, or run this test with the pump off if fish health allows.
- After the test period, measure how far the pond level and the bucket level have dropped from their marks.
If both dropped by a similar amount, most of your loss is probably evaporation. If the pond dropped significantly more than the bucket, you are likely dealing with a leak or overflow.
Avoid leaving buckets where children or pets can tip them or fall in. Even a small volume of unattended water can be risky.
Common Leak Patterns by Pond Type
Certain pond designs tend to develop characteristic problems over time. Recognizing these can save you hours of searching in the wrong place.
Flexible Liner Ponds
Flexible liners are forgiving and popular, but they are vulnerable to punctures and edge problems.
Typical issues include:
- Roots or sharp rocks piercing the liner from below
- Liner exposed to sun at the edges becoming brittle and cracking over the years
- Animals clawing or chewing at the liner at one particular spot
- Unprotected underlayment that shifts, allowing a sharp stone to slowly wear through
If your pond is several years old and has never been inspected under the rockwork, a slow leak from a liner puncture becomes more likely. Liner age and installation details affect how long a pond liner lasts.
Preformed or Rigid Tubs
Plastic or fiberglass preformed ponds often fail at seams, folds, or where the rigid shell has been stressed by freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rocks, or ground movement.
Inspect the molded corners and shelves closely for hairline cracks. These may only leak when the water level covers that specific feature, so watching where the level stabilizes is especially helpful.
Concrete or Masonry Ponds
Concrete can crack as soils move or if it was not properly cured or reinforced. Hairline cracks may only seep slowly, while larger structural cracks can cause noticeable drops.
Do not attempt structural concrete repairs without being sure the pond is safely drained and supported. Deep cracks, bowing walls, or shifting coping stones can signal broader structural issues that a qualified contractor should evaluate.
When It Makes Sense to Call a Professional
There is a point where continued guessing or repeated partial fixes cost more time and money than a focused assessment from someone who locates leaks every week.
Consider bringing in a professional pond builder or leak detection specialist when:
- You suspect a buried plumbing leak and would need to dig near electrical lines or utilities
- The pond is large or deep enough that draining or working in it could be hazardous
- Concrete walls, steep rockwork, or retaining structures show signs of movement or cracking
- You have tried the basic tests above and still cannot find the source, but the water loss is substantial
A good contractor can pressure test plumbing, use specialized listening equipment, and recommend safe repair methods and sealers that match your pond's materials. Different pond sealer options suit different materials, but a local expert can match those products to your specific structure.
What To Do After You Find the Likely Cause
Once you have narrowed your water loss down to a splash path, edge issue, plumbing leak, or liner damage, the repair approach depends on the size and location of the problem.
Small splash problems often need only a raised liner edge. Moving a rock or trimming a plant may be enough. Minor liner punctures can sometimes be patched in place with a compatible patch kit on a clean, dry surface.
Larger problems, such as failed plumbing under rockwork or widespread liner deterioration, may require partially or fully draining the pond and lifting rocks. If major access is required, consider whether a planned stream or filtration upgrade belongs in the same project. If draining becomes necessary, follow a safe pond-draining process, then locate the pond leak before choosing a repair.
Throughout any repair, keep fish health at the top of your priority list. Move fish to temporary holding only if you can provide adequate volume, aeration, shade, and filtration, and never use sealers or repair materials in a stocked pond unless they are clearly labeled as safe for aquatic life and used according to manufacturer directions.
A pond that holds its level is easier to maintain and safer for fish. It is also far more relaxing to enjoy. With a bit of careful observation and systematic testing, you can usually figure out what is really happening to that disappearing water and choose a sensible, safe fix.
