Homemade Pond Spitters

Create a truly unique spitter fountain in your pond with a homemade pond spitter!

Best of all, a simple spitter can be easier to make than you might think.

To get you started, here are instructions for a simple water can pond spitter.

Materials

  • Watering can
  • Pond pump
  • 1” tubing
  • Optional: Flowers/plants

How To Make A Homemade Pond Spitter With A Watering Can

  1. Place the watering can next to your pond so the spout is over the surface of the pond. Imagine water coming out of the spout. We want that water to pour into the pond. You may have to angle the can slightly
  2. Install your pond pump and run the tubing into your watering can. You want the pump to pull water out of your pond and into the watering can.
  3. Turn pump on. As the watering can fills with water, it will start to shoot out of the spout back into the pond, effectively creating a low-cost, unique pond spitter.
  4. You can optionally suspend flowers in the top opening of the watering can and have them drape out and over the side of the can giving it a truly unique and appealing look.

Tip: Use a solar pond pump for a zero-running cost solution.

How Do Pond Spitters Work?

Pond spitters work by connecting to a pond pump. The pump pulls in water from the pond, in through the spitter, and the spitter essentially “spits” or shoots the water out back into the pond. The mechanics are similar to a fountain, which is why spitters are often called fountains..

Benefits Of Pond Spitters

  1. Aerates Pond Water: A spitter, while typically used for decorative purposes, is also a form of pond aerator. They throw or “spit” water taken from your pond into the air, where it collects oxygen, and then reenters the pond. This helps to increase oxygen levels in your pond water which will in turn help keep your koi and other fish thriving and happy, increase water quality, and encourage beneficial bacteria
  2. Increases Water Movement: Another great benefit, which again, is similar to an aerator or fountain, is that spitters create water movement in your pond. This is important to prevent algal blooms and help get rid of mosquito larvae in your pond or water garden. It’s also good to keep nutrients, oxygen and beneficial bacteria moving around and spreading throughout your pond.
  3. Adds Style & Character: Pond spitters are one of the most popular pond decorations used to spruce up the appearance of a pond or water garden. With all the different options out there, you’ll be able to find a spitter that makes your pond truly unique.
  4. Creates Ambient Noise: Along with improving water quality and the appearance of your pond, spitters also create ambient noise that many find to be extremely relaxing and stress-reducing.
